Our youth programs support Indigenous migrant and Latinx youth through leadership development, cultural programs, substance use prevention, mental health support, and community organizing in Humboldt County. Youth participate in mariachi, arts and media projects, gardening programs, workshops, cultural events, and advocacy connected to issues affecting their schools and communities.
Through Elevate Youth, we organize substance use prevention programs focused on youth leadership, cultural identity, mariachi, wellness, peer support, workshops, and school-based advocacy connected to the wellbeing of Indigenous migrant and Latinx students. We formed a Youth Council where students could bring their concerns and ideas directly to school administrators and local decision makers, helping support conversations around Sanctuary Schools and student wellbeing. Seeds of Hope is for youth mental health support and suicide prevention outreach, and we continue connecting youth and families with wellness resources and referrals.
Through these programs, young people build leadership skills, cultural connection, confidence, and stronger relationships within the community.
by connecting with culture
Many people first connect with Centro through immigrant rights workshops, cultural events, youth programs, or community outreach. Over time, these programs have helped youth, immigrant families, and community members build relationships, leadership skills, and stronger connections to culture and community.
Elevate Youth is Centro del Pueblo’s substance use prevention campaign focused on Indigenous migrant and Latinx youth in Humboldt County. The program supports youth leadership, cultural identity, health, and community advocacy through mariachi, arts programs, youth organizing, workshops, and school-based conversations around substance use prevention and mental health. Through Elevate Youth, students have helped bring attention to the needs, concerns, and experiences of Indigenous migrant and Latinx youth directly to school administrators, educators, and local decision makers. This work helped support Centro’s Sanctuary Schools initiative and continued conversations around safer and more supportive school environments.
A local, state-sponsored program dedicated to giving Latine youth the skills to tell their own stories through a variety of mediums. Participants learn to create and present their content on radio and TV, and in magazines and theatrical productions. Youth are invited to schools, workshops, and cultural exhibitions to share what they have learned with their peers. They are given leadership opportunities to host cultural events, public forums, and discussions. By giving voice to their stories, Latine youth inspire our community to come together to heal, connect, and uplift the next generation.
